TYPE JOURNAL - Week 12

I find mysefl noticing menu's a lot more since working on this menu project. This menu was at Qdoba's which I went to the other day for lunch. The first thing I noticed was their mix of typefaces, they did a really nice job creating a look for the menu and the type plays well into that modern feel. Overall the menu was easy to read and well designed.

MENU - in-progress packaging design

Here is the in-progress of my packaging design. After looking at a lot of different beer 6-pack designs, I still wasn't sure exactly what look I wanted to go for. I came across an old book, with a cover that was just the right size and thought it would make a good container for my bottles. I wanted to only do a 4 pack because of time constraint with creating labels. Eventually I would want to make more labels for the other two bottles that are different. After the critique today, there are a lot of changes that need to be made on my packaging. Mostly on the outside, I need to incorporate my logo in some way. Originally I was going to make a tag, but it was mentioned to just add it to the outside like a stamp. also, if I add burlap to the menu, I want to tie it in to this design as well and thought of wrapping it in the burlap instead of the paper.

MENU - in-progress citique

Here are some pictures from my first draft of my menu. After the critique, I am going to make a few changes mostly with the cover. I want to look into making my logo slightly smaller and also play with the binding, possibly adding burlap to the spine. Throughout the menu, there were slight changes that needed to be made with prices and also some typos in spelling.

TYPE JOURNAL - Week 10 and week 11

I've been looking at a lot of packaging design for 6 packs of beer for my menu project and have come across some really great uses of typography. Since I am a few weeks behind on my type journal I decided to catch up by posting a few of the interesting ones I found here.

This package is a brilliant use of type and also imagery to create a dynamic and different package design. Also when looking closer at the words "bold city" you can see the use of mixing typefaces and size variations. Overall the piece is very well designed.

Week 11
Although these are not beer packaging or labels, I stumbled on these boxes throughout my search and was immediately entranced. When trying to find out more about them, I found that they are boxes used for handmade objects such as bags, gloves... etc. The use of type on these boxes are random and very hand-sketched which complements nicely the mission of their products they are creating.

MENU - In-progress

MENU - logo progress

Here is my initial sketch for the logo. I wanted to play off of the old time photographs they would have and also old book cover designs. Below is my translation into the computer with two different variations in a similar color it will be on my menu. Last is my final version that I printed out in black and in different sizes to see how visible it would be.

MENU - Mood Board

This is my mood board for the menu project. I found a few typeface that I felt worked really well with my design and also some pictures that describe my idea/ feel of the Grimm Brewery. Currently I am working on sketches for my labels, pictures will come shortly.

Final Poster Project

To revise my poster i worked on adding more things that put it in the time-period that I was going for. I researched more posters with the western feel and changed the background as well.

TYPE JOURNAL - week 9

In honor of my upcoming menu project I decided to do my Type Journal on examples of what I want to use on my project. As of right now I am planning on creating a Grimm Brewery dealing with all the fairy-tales of the Grimm Brothers. The above example is a book I found that has the ornamentation that I am going for throughout my design. I also found the type treatment of this book to fit well with the almost terrifying vine texture. Below is a much different use of typface that I was planning on exploring more throughout my labels on the beer glasses. This is a Jessica Hishe Tom Sawer book cover that I really want to play off of her great use of type mixed with illustrations.

TYPE JOURNAL - week 8

This week I decided to compare and contrast 2 website designs focusing on their use of typography. I was browsing the Millersville University store and the first thing I  though when I got to the page, was how horrible the design was. Not only is the overall design bad, the type makes it so much worse. They use a script typeface for the small links that are barely legible at a larger size let alone so small. This typeface is found throughout the rest of the page randomly placed and in no way os descriptive of a link.

Below I added a website that I believed used very nice typography. Target uses a typeface with large counters in the "o" and it is very legible on screen. Everything is cohesive and if they do use more then one typeface, it is mixed very nicely and hardly noticeable.

Poster Project in-progress

I got my inspiration from old advertising posters that use only typography to get the meaning across. I wanted to give the same feel with my "40 tips and tricks" poster (seen below). Everything centered and an emphasis on the text and what is important.

Type Journal - WEEK 7

At the book store the other day I stumbled on this book cover which uses wonderful typography. I knew it looked familiar and after investigation I realized it is created by the graphic designer Jessica Hische who uses many older looking, new typefaces for her work. The photo below is something I just found online that is a interesting play on hierarchy of type I found funny.

Type Journal - WEEK 6

I was watching TV the other day and noticed that some commercials have great typography in them. The Ford commercials are wonderful examples of using type in a new way with motion and video at the same time. Here are some screen shots of the videos and also the links to the different commercials.

50 Ways to Help the Planet - SKETCHES

Our next project is to design a poster using only typography of the copy "50 Ways to Help the Planet" that was given to us in class. Here are my 10-11 sketches of possible ways to design the poster.

Type Journal - Week 5

This is from a type book that I had lying around the house. I found this one very interesting how the descenders create the form of the kangaroo. Its a very unique typeface that becomes a logo all in itself.
