Type Journal Week 3

I got this poster in the mail the other day and I had to use it as one of my journal entries because it really is not the best use of type. I counted at least 5 different type faces across the whole add. There really is no marriage between any of them and they seem randomly placed just wanting them to stand out.

T-SHIRT PROJECT 50 sketches

These are my 50 sketches of possible t-shirt designs for this project. I found it very hard to come up with 50 different ideas, but it definitely pushed me to think outside of the box and do different things. I have a few that I am leaning towards possibly doing, ones that embody Adrian Frutiger the most.

Type Journal Week #2

Entry #1

In honor of our new project I wanted to do my type journal entries for this week on Adrian Frutiger, the typographer that I have been studying for my T-shirt project. While browsing for different pictures of his fonts I came across a few images that really stood out. The typeface Frutiger was created for airport signs. It had to be very legible and easy to read from far away and also close up at an upward angle. This first entry is a good example of the font and also portrays the purpose it was created for.

Type Journal week #1

I went to a book store over the weekend and was overwhelmed by how much typography was jumping out to me then it ever has. Mostly all books have type on them, some with good typography and others with (shall I say) not so good. This first one I was drawn to for it's creativeness. I read this book back in high-school, but the cover really stood out to me. The type treatment is so creative actually becoming part of the illustration.

Next I came across another book from my highschool days "Lord of the Flies." I saw that there were two different covers of the same book right next to each other and it was interesting to compare the two. The first is a very unclean script like font, while the other has very clean lines but has sharp end caps. It is interesting to me that although these type faces are quite different, they both describe the book in their own different way. However if I had to choose one, it would be the first. That could just be the amazing illustration that goes with it, but I also feel that this typeface embodies what this book really is about.

Typography games

When searching online for free games that have to deal with typography, it was amazing just how many I found. Here are just a few that I found with ranking them out of 5 stars.

http://type.method.ac/    --Kerning game **

http://shape.method.ac/   --shape the character forms **

http://www.deep.co.uk/games/font_game/  --shoot the typefaces ****

cheeseorfont.com/ --distinguish between cheese name or font name ****

My favorite game I found was the last one, where you have to shoot the serif and not the san-serif fonts. It's a way to look at type in a fun way.

Project 2- 4 letter word

Our assignment was to take boxes made of circles to create a 4 letter word. One upper case, one lower case and one with a combination or what ever we wished.

Project 1- Typogranalogies

In class we had to create figures out of type characters. The only requirements were that the type had to be from a publication and we were not allowed to cut the character in any way, but could add one embellishment. The first one I created really just hit me as being something different I used a question mark I that I found in an ad from a house and garden magazine and added some commas for the ears. The second one a created was also from an ad, but this time from a fashion magazine. I also added an embellishment with the wings on this one. For my final printout I choose to go with the cat, mostly because it was the first one I created and thought it worked well being simple and true to the original type character.
